2022.01.16 16:37 jim21869 Friends and Family (Chapter 4) Part 1
This Chapter will be done TWO PARTS.
After lunch, Jim returned to work. It only took him about fifteen minutes to drive from Park Road Shopping Center to Queen City Chevrolet. There was hardly any traffic on Woodlawn Road and South Tryon Street, the route he took to the dealership.
Upon arrival at Queen City Chevrolet, Jim went straight to his office. Right away, Jim took out that picture of the black Corvette he talked about earlier that day. The salesman who asked Jim about the possibility of Hot Wheels making a model of the black Corvette stopped by his office. His name was Martin Burke. He said, “Jim, I got some news for you.”
“Sure, Martin. What is it?”
“While I was eating lunch, I looked on eBay. Sure enough, there’s already a Hot Wheels model of that Corvette.”
“Really?” Jim asked.
Martin answered, “Yes, Jim. And I just ordered one.”
Jim said, “Cool. I’ll go on eBay right now and order a couple. One for me, and another for my daughter, Valerie.”
“Sure, Jim. You do that.”
“Okay. Thanks, Martin.”
Jim took a minute and went on eBay. There were a number of sellers selling models of the Corvette. Within about ten minutes, Jim found a good deal on two Hot Wheels models of the black 2011 Corvette. He did order two. He would keep one, and he would give the other to Valerie on her birthday, which was coming up soon.
After he got done on eBay, he returned to the showroom floor. He met a couple who was in the market for a new compact. He took the couple outside, and he directed their attention to a new red Chevrolet Cruze. When Jim tried to sell a vehicle, he was only too happy to show them everything that the vehicle had to offer. That included the heater and air conditioning, the radio and CD player, the gear shift, the cup holders, the trunk space, the engine, and he also showed them how to operate the key fob remote. Nowadays, the remotes for Chevrolet (and pretty much any other GM vehicle) did more than lock and unlock the vehicle and open the trunk and set off the panic alarm, it also started the vehicle! Jim always felt that when you showed someone everything a vehicle had to offer, it showed that he was not only eager to sell the vehicle, but also to gain a customer, and a friend as well. And he also knew they would be back for service whenever it was needed, whether it was an oil change, or some mechanical issue. Jim felt doing those things would ensure that a customer would return to the dealership to buy a new vehicle, time and again. And Jim knew something else about selling vehicles. When you sell a vehicle, it’s a good feeling.
Jim asked the couple if they would like to take the Chevy Cruze out for a test drive. The couple said they would. Jim also asked them if they would like a soda. The husband opted for a Coke, and the wife wanted a Diet Coke.
Jim brought out the dealer tag, along with two cans of Coke and a can of Diet Coke. After he put the dealer tag on the car, he asked the couple to get in the car. Jim gave the husband the Coke and kept the other one for himself, and he gave the wife the can of Diet Coke. The husband was the one who drove. Before they left the lot, Jim showed the husband how to operate the gear shift. He also showed him how to operate the air conditioning (no need for the heater today, and probably not for a while). He also showed them how to operate the radio. The car’s radio contained a trial run of the Sirius-XM Satellite Network, as well as a trial run of the OnStar system, which many found reliable in times of need, whether it was directions to a certain place, or even a need for police or emergency personnel. The radio was set on the channel that played music from the eighties.
The test drive was now underway. For test drives, Jim always took the same route. The test drives always started with a right turn from the lot onto South Tryon Street. From there, it was on to Clanton Road, then north on Interstate 77 to the John Belk Freeway, then Carson Boulevard to South Tryon Street back to the dealership.
They were now on South Tryon Street. Jim showed the husband driving the car the features inside. The first thing Jim did was show the husband how to turn on the air conditioning. Jim turned on the radio when they reached the intersection of South Tryon Street and West Boulevard. The Sirius-XM eighties channel, which they called “80’s on 8,” was playing some special program, playing songs from 1984. A good song was now playing. Huey Lewis and the News. If this is it…please let me know. As soon as Jim heard it, he went to silence. It seemed as though his mind was someplace else. The husband, named Jesse Weaver, asked, “Mister Faulkner, is something wrong?”
Another moment of silence. Then Jim answered, “Huh?”
Then Jim waved his left hand as he said, “Oh. Nothing. I guess my mind drifted off someplace. But anyway…”
Jim continued to show the car’s features. Before he could show him how to operate the seat controls, he said, “Okay, Jesse. The next light is Clanton Road. That’s where we’ll make a right turn.”
“Okay, Mister Faulkner.”
“Jesse, please do me a favor and call me Jim.”
“Okay, Jim. I guess I can’t help being formal.”
They were now on Clanton Road. It seemed Jesse was quite impressed by the seat controls. The seats were leather. The seats could be heated, and they could even massage. Jesse told Jim he had some minor back issues, and the seats could come in handy. Jim’s silence returned when they got onto the on-ramp for Interstate 77, headed north toward uptown. Another song from the summer of 1984. This time, a group that was called Spandau Ballet. Only When You Leave. Once again, Jesse and his wife began to wonder about Jim. The wife asked, “Jim, are you okay?”
Just before they reached the exit for Remount Road, Jim said, “Yes. I guess that song took me back to a simpler time. Some songs can do that.”
“Yes, Jim. They can do that,” Jesse said.
Jesse drove the car on Interstate 77 at exactly the posted speed limit of fifty-five. Along the way, they were passed by two interesting trucks. One was a truck for Kellogg’s. The other was a car carrier carrying what appeared to be exotic sports cars like Ferrari, Porsche, and even a new Lamborghini. When Jim saw them, he wondered where those trucks carrying cereals and exotics sports cars were headed. They were going north, so he figured they were going to places in the northern part of North Carolina, such as Winston-Salem, Greensboro, or even Raleigh. Or maybe further up north to Virginia, New York, or even to Canada.
They got onto John Belk Freeway, then on Carson Boulevard, then South Tryon Street back to the dealership. When they got out of the car, the wife had a question. “Jim, are you related to Wendy Faulkner by any chance?”
Jim quickly answered, “Yes, I am. She’s my mother.”
Then the wife said, “Oh, wow! I remember her. She always was a sweet person.”
Jim said, “Yes. She still is.”
The wife said, “I see. Me and her worked together at that produce plant on Hovis Road on the west side of Charlotte. Boy we had some good times there. We used to place bets on who could pack the most boxes!”
“No kidding!” Jim said.
The wife continued. “We were working together those two times she was pregnant with those two girls. What did she name them?”
Jim answered, “Those are my half-sisters. Two of them. I have four altogether. Two of each from my mother and father. Mom named the first one Emily. The other one’s Charlotte, but we call her Charlie.”
“Okay. I remember she was dating a man who worked at a machine shop across the street from the produce plant. He was kind of nasty. I met him once, and that was enough.”
Then Jim said, “I can understand that. Mom never brought him to the house. I never met him. And to be honest, I’m not even dying to.”
The wife said, “I keep up with him with some, only on Facebook. He’s since married, and he has kids of his own. We never talk about Wendy, Emily or Charlie. He seems to be happy. He’s now working at an oil field up in North Dakota.”
“Good. He can stay there,” Jim said.
Then the wife said, “Wendy and I used to hang out quite a bit. Does she still live around here?”
Jim answered, “Yes. Down in Ballantyne. South Charlotte.”
“Jim, would you do me a special favor? Next time you see her, please tell her Kathy Jamison Weaver from Hickory asked about her.”
“I will,” Jim said.
Then Jim asked the couple, “So, how do you like the car?”
Jesse answered, “Jim, I must say this. Kathy and I are quite pleased.”
Then Kathy said, “Jim, we have two kids. A son and a daughter. Our son’s graduating from high school this June, and then he’ll be off to Appalachian State University. Our daughter turns sixteen next week. After this summer, it’ll be just us three in the house. Me, my husband and our daughter.”
Jim pointed to the car and said, “Going for something smaller, I take it.”
Jesse said, “Yes, Jim. We are.”
Then Jim got a look at the SUV the couple came in, a late-model Ford Escape. “Is that what you’re thinking about trading in?” Jim asked.
It was Kathy who answered. “Yes, Jim. With the household about to get smaller, we just don’t need something big any longer.”
“Okay, then. Let’s get down to business.”
Jim took the couple back inside and to his office. Jim got a look at their credit, and it seemed to be pretty good. Before he filled out the necessary paperwork, Jim walked outside to check out the 2003 Ford Escape the couple would be trading in. The mileage on it was quite low, around thirty-six thousand miles. And the vehicle seemed to be well-maintained, regular oil changes and tire rotations and filter changes. Jim seemed quite pleased.
When it was all said and done, Jesse and Kathy Weaver left Queen City Chevrolet in a new Chevrolet Cruze.
Jim sold one more car before he left work for the day. He felt it was still early, so he decided to drive to Wendy’s house to see him and his half-sisters for a few minutes.
Wendy’s house was in a part of Charlotte called Ballantyne. It was off Interstate 485, south of Charlotte. Ballantyne was a collection of shops and restaurants, some of which Jim wanted to check out. It also had a pretty nice looking movie theater, accented by a neat looking crown top, which Jim thought looked like an airport tower. It was beautiful when lit up at night.
Wendy’s house was located off Community House Road. It was a very nice looking neighborhood, one everyone wishes they could live in. Jim arrived at Wendy’s house. Her black BMW was parked in the driveway, and not in the garage. Jim parked his minivan next to the BMW. When he stepped onto the front porch, he rang the doorbell. Wendy opened the door, and right away, she hugged him.
Wendy looked like she had just got home from work. She did. Wendy worked at an insurance office on Johnston Road. She was still in her business attire, a suit with a skirt, a silk blouse, pantyhose and high heels. She asked Jim, “Sweetie, what brings you to this nice house?”
Jim answered, “Oh, I just got off work and I thought I’d stop by and see you and my half-sisters for a few minutes.”
Wendy said, “That’s nice. Charlie and Emily will both be home from work in a few minutes.”
Emily was now working at a bank near the house. Charlie was working at a nearby Bi-Lo Supermarket. Charlie was also in college, but classes were out for the week.
“Want some iced tea, Jim?” Wendy asked.
“That’ll be nice. But I can’t stay too long.”
Wendy poured some iced tea in an orange disposable plastic cup. Then she poured another cup for herself. After she handed Jim his cup, they sat down at the table in the dining room. Wendy asked him, “So how was your day?”
Jim answered, “Pretty good. I sold a lot of vehicles today.”
“That’s good. Anything else happen today?” Wendy asked.
“I had lunch today with April Lynn Holbrook.”
“One of the cars I sold today was a new Chevy Cruze.”
“Okay,” Wendy said.
“I sold it to a couple out of Hickory. The husband and wife seemed very nice. The wife claims she knows you.”
“How so?” Wendy asked.
“After the test drive, the wife asked me if I was related to Wendy Faulkner. I told her I was, and I also told her you’re my mother.”
“Okay. And what was that wife’s name?” Wendy asked.
“Kathy Jamison Weaver.”
It didn't take long for Wendy to recognize the name, at least the maiden one. “Oh, I remember her. We used to work together at Charlotte Produce Company.”
“That’s what she said.”
“Kathy asked about you and how you’re doing. I told her you’re doing okay. I also told her about Emily and Charlie.”
“And I suppose she told you about their father,” Wendy said.
“Not in so many words. I never met him. You know that. And trust me, I’m not even dying to.”
Wendy said, “Okay, Jim. We’ll just drop it.”
“Good idea,” Jim said.
Then Wendy said, “Kathy and I had some good times. We used to go to some of Charlotte’s best nightclubs. We’d down some cold ones, and then we’d ride all over Charlotte, having the time of our lives.”
“Wow!” Jim exclaimed.
“You remember her, I’m sure. You met her.”
“When?” Jim asked.
“Jim, how soon you forget. You remember the summer of ’87, don’t you? I introduced you to Kathy, who was my best friend. She had that old Mustang, remember?”
It took Jim about a minute, but it finally came back to him. “Now I remember. Kathy took us for rides in that old Mustang. That was one awesome car. It was a 1965 model, if I remember correctly.”
“It’s all coming back to you now, isn’t it, Jim?”
Then Jim told Wendy a little more about what Kathy Jamison Weaver was up to these days. Jim told Wendy that Kathy was married to a man named Jesse, and she was now working for a Merrill Lynch office in Hickory. Jim also told Wendy about Kathy and Jesse having two children, a son about to graduate high school in June and attend Appalachian State University in Boone in the fall, and a daughter about to turn sixteen. He also told her a good bit about Jesse, who was a dentist in Hickory.
Charlie arrived home, still in her Bi-Lo uniform. She looked more than a little tired. Charlie said, “Hi, Mom. Hi to you too, Jim.”
Charlie bent her rather skinny body down to Jim, still in his chair, and she gave him a small peck on his forehead. She said, “Mom, my car’s broke down and it’s still at Bi-Lo.”
Wendy said, “Oh, dear. Maybe we’ll be able to get it in a little while.”
Then Jim said, “Charlie, I might can get someone from the service department at the dealership to look at it.”
“I don’t know, Jim. Your dealership is Chevy and my car is a Toyota.”
“Charlie, it doesn’t matter. We service all makes and models, regardless.”
“So basically, if it’s a vehicle and has a motor, your service department will tend to it, right?”
“Absolutely,” Jim answered.
Charlie said, “Good, Jim. I just may call on you.”
And that was when Emily stepped in. Emily had on about the same business attire as Wendy. Emily said, “Hello, Mom and Charlie and Jim.”
Emily hugged Jim and gave him a kiss on the cheek, nearly filling his face with some of her blonde hair. Then she pulled up a chair, and she sat beside Jim. “So how was your day,” Jim asked Emily and Charlie.
Emily was the first to answer. “My day was okay. A lot of customers at Bank of America.”
Then Charlie answered, “Good, but tiring. Try working at a supermarket sometime, Jim.”
Jim said, “No thanks, Charlie. I’ll just stay at Queen City Chevrolet.”
Then Jim looked at his watch, and he said, “Dear, look at the time. I best be going. I got to get to the Sunbeam Bread Store and the store closes at seven. I got to get some more bread.”
Wendy said, “Okay, Jim. But let me refill your cup before you go.”
Wendy took Jim’s cup, put some more ice in it, and she refilled it with iced tea. Charlie got up, and she hugged Jim and gave him a kiss on the cheek. Then Emily gave Jim a hug and a kiss on the cheek. After Wendy handed Jim his cup, she gave him a hug and a kiss on the cheek. And with that, Jim was out the door and on his way home, but not before he had to stop by the Sunbeam Bread Store. But before he got onto Johnston Road, Jim got a phone call. It was from Lauren.
“Hi, Dad,” Lauren said.
“Hi, honey. Something wrong?”
“No, Dad. I just wanted to call and let you know we’re home from the park.”
“Did you all have a good time?” Jim asked.
Lauren answered, “Yes, Dad. We enjoyed ourselves. Ryan played with me and Caitlyn mostly. April Lynn just picked him up. She and Ryan just left.”
Jim said, “Okay, Lauren. I’m glad you girls and Ryan all enjoyed yourselves.”
“Thanks, Dad. So am I.”
Then Jim said, “And I know April Lynn was happy that Ryan spent some time outdoors and with you girls.”
Then Lauren reminded Jim to stop by the Sunbeam Bread Store and pick up some more bread. Jim said he would, and that he had not forgotten.
If the houses were not the most important points of the neighborhood, the Sunbeam Bread Store sure was. It was a fixture in the neighborhood since the early seventies. It was basically a “bakery thrift store” and sold bread made by Sunbeam. The store also sold cakes, snacks (made by Wise), and hot dog and hamburger buns, also made by Sunbeam. The store also sold soda and iced tea in jugs. A man named Parks Burtrum ran the store until 1994, when he retired. After that, Amy Courtland ran the store. Amy worked at a similar store in Greensboro. Since taking over the store, Amy had been the manager. Jim, along with everybody else in the neighborhood, had patronized the store from the day it opened.
The Sunbeam Bread Store was on East Morehead Street, and within walking distance of Bethany Street. It was in a small strip shopping center. Two other businesses occupied the shopping center. Facing the shopping center from East Morehead Street, a Subway occupied the left side. On the right side, a State Farm Insurance office. And in the middle, the Sunbeam Bread Store.
Jim got to the store with only about a couple minutes before the store closed. Amy was about to close up. But Jim walked inside. He said, “Amy, I am sorry about this, but I do need some bread.”
Amy smiled and said, “Jim, it’s okay. It’s just a couple minutes before closing. Please go ahead and get what you need.”
Jim quickly picked up two loaves of Sunbeam Bread. And he figured while he was at it, he’d get some barbecue bread. He went to the counter, gave Amy the money, and he said, “It’s just I don’t wanna keep you.”
Amy said, “Jim, it’s okay. You’re welcome anytime.”
“How are your kids doing?” Jim asked Amy.
Amy answered, “They’re all doing okay. They’re enjoying this week off from school. Mackenzie and Donnie spent most of today getting in some studying.”
“That’s nice. Chelsea did that today.”
“What about your other girls?” Amy asked.
Jim answered, “They went to the park today. They wanted to play some.”
“That’s good,” Amy said.
“Maybe they’ll go to the park again tomorrow,” Jim said.
Then Amy said, “That’ll be good. Maybe my kids can join them.”
“That’ll be good,” Jim said.
Amy said, “Okay. When I get home, I’ll ask them.”
“Okay, Amy. Please let me know either tonight or tomorrow.”
“I will, Jim.”
And with that, Amy closed up the store, and both left for home.
Jim went back home. All five girls were in the kitchen, waiting on him. When he stepped inside, he was amazed to see how clean the house was. He said, “Chelsea, it looks to me like you did a good job. Did you make time to do all this?”
Chelsea answered, “Yes, Dad. I sure did. And I still managed to get in my studying as well.”
And he saw something else. Dinner was ready. Lasagna, salad and garlic bread. Jim said, “Heavens to Betsy, Chelsea! You had time to do all that?”
Chelsea answered, “My sisters did help with dinner. I did the lasagna. Caitlyn and Lindsay and Lauren did the salad. Valerie did the bread.”
Jim said, “How nice. And I suppose dinner’s ready.”
Lindsay answered, “Yes, it is. So let’s eat.”
The six sat down. Jim said grace. Then after the food was passed, the conversation began. Jim asked, “How was the park?”
Lauren answered, “It was pretty good. We walked and played on the swings mostly.”
Lindsay added, “Ryan showed up. He played with Lauren and Caitlyn mostly.”
Jim said, “That’s what I got from Lauren when she called me.”
Then Caitlyn said, “Ryan’s a lot of fun to play with.”
Jim looked across the table and smiled at Caitlyn. Then Lindsay said to Caitlyn, “I know. You and Lauren and Ryan seemed to have been enjoying yourselves.”
Then Jim asked, “You think you girls might want to go to the park tomorrow?”
Caitlyn asked, “Dad, can we?”
Right away, Lauren, Lindsay and Valerie agreed. Then Jim said, “I don’t see why not. I spoke to Amy at the Sunbeam Bread Store. She was thinking of letting her kids join you all.”
“Can they, Dad?” Lindsay asked.
Jim answered, “Amy’s gonna let me know either tonight or tomorrow.”
Then Chelsea said, “Dad, if it’s okay, I’d like to join them. I can do my studying in the fresh air and bright sunshine.”
Jim said, “Chelsea, that’ll be great. Mackenzie and Donnie have been studying today also. Maybe they’ll join you and you all can study together.”
Chelsea said, “I sure hope so.”
Jim said, “During one of my test drives today, I saw something interesting.”
“How so?” Lauren asked.
Jim described what he saw on Interstate 77 earlier in the day. “I saw two trucks. One was a Kellogg’s, and it had all those characters from those cereals.”
“Was Tony the Tiger on that truck?” Caitlyn asked.
Jim answered, “He sure was, along with Snap and Crackle and Pop, Toucan Sam and Dig ‘Em.”
“Cool!” Caitlyn exclaimed.
Then Jim said, “And Valerie, I thought of you. I saw a truck carrying a lot of neat looking exotic cars. Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, you name it.”
“Wow! That’s cool!” Valerie exclaimed.
“I wish you got photos of those trucks, Dad,” Lindsay said.
“So do I. But I didn’t get time.”
Chelsea said, “Well, Dad. At least we know you had a good day.”
Lauren added, “About as good as ours.”
Then the phone rang. Jim excused himself to answer it. He looked at the caller ID. It was Amy. He answered it. “Hi, Amy. What’s up?”
“Jim, I asked my kids if they would like to go to the park tomorrow.”
“They said they would.”
“Amy, that’ll be great.”
Amy asked Jim, “Are your kids going to the park tomorrow?”
Jim answered, “They said they would. Chelsea’s even going to join them.”
“Jim, that’ll be good. Mackenzie and Donnie said they’d be there as well.”
“Okay, then. I guess my girls will see your kids tomorrow,” Jim said.
“They certainly will. And I know they’ll have a lot of fun.”
Then, Jim received a beep on the phone, letting him know another call was coming in. Once again, he checked the caller ID. This time, it was April Lynn. Jim said, “Amy, I need to go. I got another call coming in.”
“Okay, Jim. I’ll talk to you later.”
Jim answered the second call. He said, “Hi, April Lynn.”
April Lynn said, “Hi, Jim. What’s going on?”
Jim answered, “Not much. I just got off the phone with Amy, and the girls and I have sat down for dinner.”
April Lynn said, “Okay, Jim. I won’t keep you. I just want you to know that if your girls are going to be at the park tomorrow, then I will have Ryan join them again.”
Jim said, “They are. And Chelsea’s planning to join them.”
April Lynn said, “Jim, that’ll be good.”
Then Jim said, “And something else, too. Amy’s kids are planning to join them.”
“That’ll be even better,” April Lynn said.
Then April Lynn added something else. “Jim, I heard from Julie after I got home from work this evening.”
“That new associate pastor will be in Charlotte on Friday. And Julie’s wanting to arrange some kind of meeting on Thursday evening to tell us more about her.”
“You mean she’s finally going to tell us who she is?” Jim asked April Lynn.
April Lynn answered, “That would be my guess.”
Then Jim said, “Good. Now the mystery will be revealed. We’ve been waiting for this information for quite some time.”
“And who will this meeting involve?” Jim asked April Lynn.
April Lynn answered, “From my understanding, it’ll be you and me, Mark and Kendra, Jeremy and Kurt and Hannah, Vince and Marissa, some more of our friends, and maybe Amy and our mothers.”
“Okay, April Lynn. Please let me know more when you hear something.”
“Okay, Jim. You’ll hear from Julie or myself, or even both of us.”
“Sure thing. We’re going to find out everything,” Jim said.
Then April Lynn said, “Jim, I’ll let you get back to dinner. I gotta get myself and Ryan fed. We may just do sub sandwiches. I guess it’s a nice enough evening for it. I’ll talk to you some more tomorrow, okay?”
Jim answered, “Okay, April Lynn. Enjoy your evening.”
After he hung up, Jim returned to the table. He said to the girls, “Not only are Amy’s kids gonna join you tomorrow, but Ryan will also.”
“Really?” Caitlyn asked.
Jim answered, “Yes. I just got off the phone with both Amy and April Lynn.”
Chelsea said, “Great, Dad. Tomorrow will be another nice day for the park.”
“It sure will,” Jim said.
After dinner, Jim stayed at the table to do paperwork related to the car dealership. The girls watched some TV. At around ten, the girls went to bed. Jim said to all of them, “You girls get a good night’s sleep. Tomorrow’s another big day.”
Jim watched the eleven o’ clock news on Channel 3, and then he went to bed. A little after midnight, the phone beside his bed rang. Jim checked the caller ID. Once again, April Lynn Holbrook.
Jim answered it. “Hello.”
“Hi, Jim,” April Lynn said in a sweet, girlish voice.”
“April Lynn Holbrook! Do you have any idea what time it is?”
“Yes, I do. I was asleep myself.”
Jim took a deep breath, held it for about seven seconds, let it out, and then he asked April Lynn, “Any reason why you’re not sleeping now?”
“Jim, I had a dream, and it just so happens I woke up from it.”
“Yeah. I suppose I could understand that, calling me after midnight. And not long after I put my daughters to bed.”
“Jim, please listen. It was about you. You and I were in a car together. We had just got married.”
Jim said, sounding just like Charlie Brown, “Good grief!”
April Lynn continued. “Not only that, Jim. You and I were about to get into a swimming pool. You in a suit, me in my wedding dress. You and I were about to kiss. And before I did, the dream was over. Jim Faulkner, I must say, it was very beautiful!”
“Thank heavens!” Jim exclaimed.
Then April Lynn said, “Then I woke only to realize I was back in my own bed, at my house in Charlotte, North Carolina.”
Jim hung fire for a moment, trying to find some words. Then, the words came to Jim. “April Lynn, would you please do me a favor?”
“Go to sleep!”
April Lynn once again her sweet, girlish voice when she said, “Okay, sweetie!”
Then Jim said, “And one more thing. If you should have a dream about me and you decide to call me at some crazy hour of the night to tell me about, do me another favor. Don’t!”
“Okay, Jim. Sorry about that.”
Jim laughed as he said, “It’s okay, April Lynn. You are so sweet, and you are a very good friend. I’ll talk to you some more tomorrow.”
“Good night, and sweet dreams.”
Jim and April Lynn both hung up. Maybe April Lynn wanted to tell Jim she loved him. But then again, she thought better of it.
“Dad, is everything okay?” Chelsea shouted from her room.
“Yes, everything’s okay. It’s late. Get to sleep, all of you! Good night, girls!”
And with that, the house became quiet, and everyone went to sleep.

2022.01.16 16:37 Hot_Needleworker_153 I 24f can’t figure him 23m out or what to do.
Alright I need help. This boy and I have dated before. About two years ago. Ever since, we have remained close friends and it’s gotten confusing for me. We broke up before because we were fighting and it was too much for us to deal with on top of everything else in our lives. He says he wouldn’t want to date again because he didn’t want to hurt me again, and I’ve respected that. We had that conversation about 6-7 months ago. But yet, still there is something there, and he is stubborn.
We hang out all the time. He constantly wants to and makes plans with me all the time. Like movies he wants to see, random things he needs a plus one to… I’m always the person he goes to. He compliments me all the time. He checks in on me constantly. I agree to do all of these things because he is my best friend and I really do want him in my life. We have the same sense of humor, we truly care for one another, we always have fun together and I don’t want to live life without him. I know a lot of you might say to cut him off, but I’m honestly just trying to figure him out. Hes all over the place. He’ll compliment me and say all these wonderful things about me and yet doesn’t want to be with me. He has even seemed to have an awakening and has changed a lot of his behavior since we dated before, aka he has matured… A LOT.
He asked me to make a pact with him that if we aren’t married by 30 that we would marry each other and call it done. I agreed to it. But after I was sad because it makes me feel like I’m just a last resort/last option. I don’t understand what holds him back and why it is so hard for him to admit that he wants to date me now. I think he’s scared of things messing up again. It’s a real fear and I do understand, but I hate being put on the backburner and wondering what’s really on his mind. When we talked about it before it was really hard to get anything out of him so I am afraid to bring it up. I don’t want to push him away but I also don’t want to be wondering forever. I don’t understand why he would make this pact with me if he clearly has feelings for me now. What am I supposed to do with that. I know if he’s not actively coming after me and is actually okay with not being with me then I should probably just let it go. But ugh.

2022.01.16 16:37 falsefriends This was interesting
I once told a therapist that one day I would like to return, but the elders refused to meet with me or have anything to do with me. His answer made a lot of sense: perhaps they don't want you back because you know too much! That was almost 20 years ago and I never ever heard from them.
